UNDERWORLD
Takumi looked down. “Have you seen this?” he gasped, taken aback by the spectacular view below.
After the flight to Brazil they were now in a skycar on the way to the hotel, and the clear blue skies gave the sun license to unleash its radiance, emphasising the collage of colours and textures. The lush Tijuca forest, a mountainous carpet of varied greens, surrounded the beachfront urban oasis; forest and city all spilling down towards the crystal-clear shimmering waters of the ocean. From above, the sandy white beaches appeared as a golden outline dividing the land from the sea. The bird’s-eye view made the city look like a circuit board, with each building a component and the roads its intricate circuitry.
It all made a stark contrast to Tokyo’s urban jungle, which had so few green areas.
“Look at that!” he then said, pointing to the colossal statue standing imperiously over the city with outstretched arms: Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain. “It looks even more beautiful in real life… Did you know Brazil’s Catholic prime minister refuses to be involved in the global Technopath program? He’s so against it that he won’t even allow synthetics anywhere near the statue! É lindo,” Takumi added, in Portuguese. “It’s beautiful.”
“I see someone’s assimilating Network information at my expense,” Áine said, amused by his enthusiasm.
Takumi fell silent, and she glanced at him. There were tears in his eyes.
Finally he murmured, “If there is a God, why would he take both my parents away from me? Why would he allow two good people to die?”
“I know exactly what you mean…’ she replied quietly.
He shot her a look. Did she mean that?
“If my aunt were here,” she continued, “she would probably tell you something along the lines of ‘the Lord works in mysterious ways’.”
“Do you believe that? Do you believe there’s a heaven, a hell?”
“In a way. As a person who grew up around science, I look at it like this: all things, including humans, are made up of energy. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. So when we die, that energy must go somewhere, right?”
Takumi gave her a heavy stare, before turning his attention back to the view.
“You know, my mother died in a skycar accident when I was just a kid…and my father was murdered only a year ago,” she said.
He swung back around. “Murdered? By who?”
“By the same people responsible for killing your parents, I think. That’s why I promise you I will do whatever it takes to find these people. We’re in this together.”
Takumi merely nodded, and she wondered whether he was perhaps too shocked to absorb the information.
As they descended through a small opening in the thick canopy below, Takumi spotted the spectacular hotel. “We’re here?” he asked.
“Yes. This is the Barra de Tijuca.”
“Once you are inside the hotel, we will be totally cut off from one another,” I warned Áine via her implant.
She replied, her thoughts still clear of the resort’s interference: “Fine. Just keep trying to find out about that woman.”
